The Gift of Being Yourself

In the words of the Trappist monk, Thomas Merton, “There is only one problem on which all my existence, my peace, and my happiness depend: to discover myself in discovering God. If I find Him I will find myself and if I find my true self I will find Him.”

Rather than choosing to discover ourselves or encounter God, this short, but insightful book by David Benner, guides us along a new path which permits us to uncover our identity in Christ and learn who God is at the same time.

Benner, a spiritual director and a psychologist, writes crisply and thoughtfully, inviting readers to explore the concepts of identity and authenticity, the transformational knowledge of self and God, how to identify our “false self,” who we are in reaction to the world around us, and finding our true self, who God created us to be. Each chapter has a practical application of the principles presented. And at the end of the book, there is a 1-session and a 6-session study guide, to be used in groups or for personal reflection.
